The Site layer is designed to be controlled by a specific SharePoint site owner. This layer is used to establish a "mapping" between a SharePoint site and a Jive Space, Project, or Group. Once this type of "mapping" is established, the Corporate Policy (Administrative layer) is used to determine what content can be socialized into Jive as a valid Activity Stream. This "mapping" in SharePoint also enables the use of the SharePoint widgets in the "mapped" Jive container (Space, Project, or Group).

The following table describes how this affects Jive:
| Feature | Allow only members of this site to access SharePoint content* | Allow all members of the Jive place to access SharePoint content |
|---|---|---|
| Document metadata available in Jive | Yes, regardless of the user's access to SharePoint | Yes, regardless of the user's access to SharePoint |
| Document thumbnail preview in Recent Activity widget | No, even if the user has access to SharePoint | Yes, regardless of the user's access to SharePoint |
| Document preview | Yes, but only if the current user has access to the document, otherwise no | Yes, regardless of the user's access to SharePoint |
| Link to SharePoint library and document | Yes, but when clicked the user may be challenged for credentials | Yes, but but when clicked the user may be challenged for credentials |
* Note that "members of this site" really means users that have access to the document.
