Time zone and locale preferences
Your time zone and locale settings determine how time and locale are displayed on your content, which is important for a consistent user experience across different regions.
A locale represents a set of user interface properties—including language and time zone—that are typically related to the user's geographic region. The locale setting determines the default text language in the UI, date formatting, and character encoding.
Note: Only a subset of the languages is available in the application by default. For a list of available languages, visit your user preferences page.
This can be particularly important if you use Jive from a web browser set to another locale, such as when you're working in another country. Your user preference locale takes precedence over the administrator's community settings. If you want to use the locale set by your administrator for the entire community, ensure that your web browser is not set to a specific locale, as the browser locale can override the community settings unless it is unsupported by Jive.
Decimal and thousand separators for file sizes are displayed according to the locale. When you set the locale on the Preferences page, Jive uses this locale. If your locale is set to default, Jive uses the browser locale.
Your time zone setting is crucial for timestamps when you publish a blog post, document, or discussion. The administrator sets the time zone affecting the start and end times for announcements, polls, projects, tasks, and checkpoints, though individual blog posts obtain their settings from the user's selected time zone.
Locale inheritance rules
As a community administrator, be aware that locale settings can be modified at several levels, and user preferences take precedence. Here's the locale precedence hierarchy:
- Locale set by the user in their Preferences.
- Locale set in the user's web browser. For example, a browser set to English overrides global settings.
- Locale set at the space level.
- Locale set at the root space (global) level.
Admin Console: Spaces > Settings > Space Settings
Note: The server time zone set on the operating system can override some other locale settings. If you encounter unexpected mixed-language results, check the OS language on the machines where you installed Jive.
To set your time zone and locale preferences:
- Go to Your Avatar > Preferences to open the Preferences page.
- Select your Language and Locale.
- Select your Time Zone.
- Click Save.
